General patient Instructions before surgery

Before undergoing abdominal surgery, it is important for patients to follow certain instructions to prepare for the procedure and ensure a smooth recovery. Here are some of them

  1. First, patients should inform their surgeon of any medications they are currently taking, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements. They may need to stop taking certain medications before the surgery, such as blood thinners.

  2. Patients should also inform their surgeon of any allergies or previous reactions to anesthesia.

  3. Patients should arrange for transportation home after the surgery and plan for someone to stay with them for the first 24 hours.

  4. Patients should fast for a certain period of time before the surgery, typically 6-8 hours for solid food and 2-3 hours for liquids.

  5. Patients should not smoke before the surgery as it can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of complications.

  6. Patients should also avoid wearing makeup, jewelry, contact lenses, and false nails on the day of the surgery.

  7. Patients should follow any other instructions provided by their surgeon or the surgical team, which may include showering with a special soap, wearing loose, comfortable clothing to the hospital, and bringing any necessary documents or insurance information.

It is important that patients ask their surgeon any questions they may have about the surgery, the recovery process and any post-surgery instructions. They should also provide their surgeon with accurate information about their medical history and any current health issues. Following these instructions can help ensure a safe and successful surgery and recovery.
